Using Shampoo The Right Way

Shampooing your hair may seem like the most basic task that you do on a regular basis at least once or twice a week, but when it comes to understanding the best way of using our shampoo, most of us are not really that aware.

A shampoo helps clean all the dirt and grease from your scalp. More than scrubbing out your hair, it is meant to act on the scalp and as a result, give you healthy and clean hair.

Choosing the right shampoo based on hair type:

There are so many shampoos out there these days that it is really difficult to understand which one you should be going for.

Some things that you can keep in mind while selecting your shampoo is by understanding your specific needs. Here are some of the most common types of shampoo that you can choose from to help you with various requirements:

  • Dry hair
  • Oily hair
  • Curly hair
  • Damaged hair
  • Coloured hair
  • Shineless hair
  • Dandruff
  • Hair fall
  • Brittle hair
  • Looking for long hair
  • Looking for volume
  • Frizz protection
  • Sun damaged hair
Using the right amount: This is really important, as using less or more product than required will give you no results. Too less may not clean your hair properly, and too much may be an overload.

Shampooing the right way:
  • Wet your hair with water
  • Take the required amount of shampoo on your palms
  • Rub your palms together to form a little lather
  • Apply this on your scalp
  • Massage thoroughly till you get a good amount of lather (unless you are using a shampoo that doesn't lather)
  • Make sure to spread the shampoo evenly throughout the scalp and hair
  • There is no need to vigorously scrub the shampoo through your hair, as the soap suds will clean out the ends as you wash your hair
  • Rinse hair thoroughly with water
  • If you are using any treatment shampoo, let it sit in the hair and scalp for a few minutes before washing off
Few tips to keep in mind while shampooing:
  • Comb out your hair and remove all tangles and knots before shampooing - this will ensure there are less tangles once you've shampooed
  • Make sure your hair is properly wet
  • Use the right amount of product
  • Work up a lather and then apply on scalp
  • Don't massage the shampoo too harshly
  • Do not rub shampoo on the ends of the hair
  • Rinse your hair properly
  • Make sure the water pressure is not too much while rinsing, as it can lead to hair breakage
  • Some hair treatments need to be applied before shampooing, while others need you to shampoo first. Read the instruction label carefully and shampoo accordingly.
  • For the water you use for your hair, make sure it is warm or lukewarm (in case you are not using cold water). Using water that is too hot will damage your hair.
  • After each shampoo, make sure you condition your hair using a good conditioner. Apply conditioner from the middle part of your hair till the bottom. Never apply conditioner on the scalp.
  • Towel dry hair gently to keep it from breakage and damage
These few easy tips will ensure your hair is cleaned thoroughly while causing the least amount of damage.
